The Sims
There are few titles that can claim to have broken gaming's traditional demographics as effectively as The Sims. In a gaming market that was almost always dominated by males, it became the number one selling game of all time by focusing on a gaming dynamic that didn't exclude anyone.
In fact, creator Will Wright – the man behind another genre-busting title, Sim City – calls The Sims a 'digital dollhouse' a phrase that while describing the gameplay almost perfectly, isn't the sort of term marketing men is a pre-Sims age would like to hear, But Will Wright hasn't ever been interested in producing games that appeal to pre-formed demographics.
The Sims arose through experimentation, Wright playing around with the idea of producing an architecture simulation. The people who would eventually form the focus of the title were only included as test for the architecture. But people love people, not bricks, and Electronic Arts will be forever grateful the game's selling point shifted from construction of buildings to construction of lives.

We've all been there, hearing about a new game that's going to be released soon, watching the trailers and thinking, "Oh my word, this game looks awesome!", only to be very disappointed when we actually buy the game and play it. We play for about 30 minutes only to decide it was a complete waste of money and shove it in to the back of the cupboard, never to be played again.
